I have bought and used so many quilting rulers. Some of them I’ve loved, some of them have been okay, and some I straight up don’t understand. Over the years, I’ve learned that I value versatility, I like rulers that feel like they fit in my hand, and I’ve craved a ruler that would save my Ruler Quilting Academy students both money and space.

When I connected with the folks at Sew Steady and discussed producing a ruler together, I was giddy. This was my chance to design the perfect ruler for my quilting and teaching needs! I didn’t know the first thing about how to bring an idea to life, but the Sew Steady team helped me figure it out and created incredible mockups of my ideas. I also have to give a huge shout out to Leslie in the shop because her designer’s eye was the first to see that I could arrange my desired shapes to mimics our ampersand logo.

The Quilting Rockstar Ruler

There are about two dozen motifs in Ruler Quilting Academy, but most of them can be stitched with a straight edge, a gentle curve, or a half circle. I don’t like having to switch between a stack of rulers when working on a project, so I wanted to incorporate my favorite shapes into the Quilting Rockstar Ruler. I included two different half circle sizes for versatility.

The final shape is a half-hexagon. I recently designed a quilting plan that included a hexagon background motif. I couldn’t find a ruler to help me quilt it, and ended up improvising with a straight ruler and my knowledge of geometry. I was so chuffed with the result, though, that I want to be able to quilt that motif again in the future with much more ease!

The goal of the Quilting Rockstar Ruler is to be the go-to ruler for someone learning to ruler quilt. The Quilting Rockstar Ruler, paired with the Straight-Edge Ruler, will have enough shapes and versatility that they could be the only two rulers you own, and you’d be able to stitch every shape in Ruler Quilting Academy.

The Straight-Edge Ruler

The Quilting Rockstar Straight-Edge Ruler is a companion ruler. While there is a small straight edge on the Quilting Rockstar Ruler, a dedicated tool for stitching in the ditch, grids, etc is essential. This ruler fits well into the quilter’s hand, providing a long enough straight edge and essential markings to be useful without being too long or feeling cluttered with extra markings.

Final Thoughts

Ruler quilting is a wonderful way to add precision, texture, and geometry to your projects. The Quilting Rockstar Ruler (and companion straight-edge ruler) make it easier than ever to quilt a wide variety of your favorite motifs without constantly reaching for a new ruler for each shape. It is a must-have for everyone who incorporates ruler work into their quilting plans (Plus, it’s still just dang cool that the ampersand shape worked!).
