How to Sew a Reusable Utensil Roll

Do you bring your lunch to work but always wonder how to keep your utensils safe and clean? Or maybe you need something to hold makeup brushes or paintbrushes or favorite pens on the go! This simple Reusable Utensil Roll will solve all those problems!

A utensil roll makes it easier to avoid single use plastics on the go or keep precious tools safe (makeup or pencil brushes, pens, etc) safe from bouncing around in your bag. You could even make a matching tote bag or zippy pouch for a matching set!

Supplies

  • Three (3) 12” squares (I used two pieces of canvas and one piece of cotton for the pockets)

  • One (1) piece of ribbon- 24” long (3/8” or 1/2” wide)

  • Sewing machine, etc

All seam allowances 1/4” unless otherwise noted

Instructions

  1. Take the square you are using for the pockets, and fold it in half. Stitch 1/4” from folded edge

  2. Align the pocket piece on the lower half of the RIGHT SIDE of inside of the roll. Pin in place. Mark lines every 2”. Sew down the sides and around the bottom to secure pocket piece. Sew down each marked line, backstitching at the beginning and end

  3. Center ribbon on the outside square. Sew across ribbon a few times (or sew in a small square) to secure

4. Place the two squares right sides together, making sure the ribbon is tucked inside and away from edges. Pin.

5. Sew around the outer edge using a 1/2” seam allowance, and leaving a 2” gap at the top to turn.

6. Turn roll right side out and press

7. Sew 1/4” around the outside edge to close gap and secure edges. Voila!
