FMQA Grad Showcase Join Free Motion Quilting Academy View fullsize ELLEN CARLEY: This is a photo of a wall hanging I made for my son recently. I used a few different free-motion techniques, including swirls and pebbles. He loved it and I had so much fun choosing the different patterns. View fullsize YVONNE M: The piecing of the main part was a class I took (Wendy Mathson, instructor and designer of pattern called Sawdust Trail) but I didn't think it was big enough so I added a couple of borders. View fullsize ANNE HILGERS: This is a baby quilt I finished last week. The bunny has a back side and it is on the back of the quilt. View fullsize DEBRA CARLILE: This is a single Irish chain quilt that I quilted with sunbursts and continuous curves. I appreciate String and Story so much for launching me into doing my own quilting! View fullsize JACQUELINE JOHNSON: Here’s an Attic Window quilt made for a library silent auction. Just simple meandering. View fullsize KAYLA THOMAS: I made this quilt for my daughter for her high school graduation. I stitched a lot of fun messages into this quilt and am glad she will have it to wrap up in when she’s in the dorm. Creating this quilt was a balm to my mama heart as we navigated her senior year of high school. View fullsize BARB COLBERT: Here is a pic of a quilt I recently pieced and quilted using mostly swirls. I only have 7” of throat space on my domestic machine so I quilted each block individually and stitched them together using a sashing technique by Sharon Peterson. The quilt pattern is “Tilt” from Saginaw Street Quilts. View fullsize EMMALEE ATENCIO: I used a lot of the motifs I learned from FMQA for this wall hanging. This is one of my favorite pieces I've done and it proudly hangs in my sewing room. View fullsize JAMIE HEIM: A fall quilt using FMQ oak leaves, leaves, and wood grain. View fullsize CLAIRE FOSTER: This was a recent FMQ project. It was a wedding gift for a close friend's son and new daughter-in-law. View fullsize HILARY ANDRUS: The airplane quilt is a quilt I made for my husband on my domestic machine using my free motion and ruler work skills! The tail numbers are the numbers of planes that are personal to him (I used my embroidery machine for that). View fullsize THELMA INGRAM: I made this throw for my sister. By this time I had gained enough confidence to think I could do more than just meandering. This is sample quilt where different designs are on each strip...I see improvement with every project I quilt. When I look at how much I have improved is less than one year, I am thankful to HollyAnne for the confidence she gave me to keep trying. My goal was to be able to make a quilt from start to finish. View fullsize SUSAN VANCHINA: I made this quilt for a dear friend starting chemo. My goal was bright and cheerful - she loved it. View fullsize DIANNA MOBLEY: This is a small table topper I made as a gift for my adult daughter. She requested ocean, earthy colors & batiks, and monarch butterflies are her favorite. View fullsize MARY RITCHEY: This is a quilt I made for a friend’s baby girl. I used one of the feather motifs we learned in class in the white space. View fullsize GAYLE MUSKER: This is a quilt I did for a client. She wanted it to look like waves, so I did allover McTavish quilting, but kept the pattern to horizontal only. While I was quilting on my longarm, I was skeptical, but once I took it off the hoop frame and put it on my bed, I was very pleased. My client was, as well, so a win-win! View fullsize SHAWNA PETERSON: The Buschel & Peck quilt was made for my sister. I used a combination of free motion quilting and rulers. It's not perfect, but I'm excited I was able to quilt it myself and get it to her before her birthday next month. View fullsize RACHEL KOLDENHOVEN: I just finished this baby quilt using FMQ. Before I took FMQA, I thought all FMQ had to be super-elaborate. I really enjoy using simple motifs to finish a quilt, like the loopy circles on this quilt. I love that I have the confidence to finish a quilt this way! View fullsize SELWYN KNAP: The white background quilt is The Harrisonburg pattern. This quilt has been juried into an exhibit which will be held at the Virginia Quilt Museum from 10/1-12/21/2024. It has FMQ and ruler quilting. View fullsize MITZI DOSHER: I chose a “topographic” quilting pattern that mimicked some of the fabrics in the quilt and added a lot of texture. View fullsize SUSAN GERACI: I designed and FMQed this sea turtle in February. HollyAnne’s class gave me the skills and confidence to up my game! I hadn’t ever FMQed before I took her class. She is a consummate teacher and I don’t just toss around compliments. View fullsize SHARON W: This a baby quilt that used meandering. If you look closer, you will find secret hearts stitched into the meandering stitches. I did it for the grandmother, a quilt that would stay at her home, to have for the first grandchild. View fullsize CATHERINE JONES: This is a prayer quilt for a dear friend. Pattern is by EmilyJane and features ruler work and FMQ. I am so grateful for HAK’s FMQA and Ruler Academy. Still so much to learn but I enjoy every glorious minute of it. Thank you String and Story! Want the skills to make quilts like these? Join Free Motion Quilting Academy
