How To Organize Your Quilt Project
Once you finish cutting all your yardage into squares, rectangles, triangles, etc, it’s finally time to sit down and piece your quilt top! However, without good project organization, it will quickly become difficult to keep track of which fabric correlates to which color in the pattern, which piece is which, etc. Let’s talk about how a bit of labeling and a good ol’ project tray can save the day.
To be honest, I’ve always been a bit of a “piler.” My belongings are generally tidy, but often in piles. When I started quilting, though, all my happy little “piler” energy finally found an outlet in project trays. I use trays, sticky notes, and clips to organize my quilts, and it makes a huge difference as I piece by reducing stress of trying to find the right bits, remembering which fabric is which, and more.
Tools for Organizing Your Project
A tray (tea tray, breakfast tray, or the like)
Sticky notes or similar
Clips (wonder clips or similar)
If you’d also like to make a project color card, make sure you have a scrap of white or light fabric and a fine line permanent or fabric marker, too

Key Project Organizing Tips
Use a tray to keep your pattern, fabrics, any important notions, etc together. This helps prevent pieces from getting separated or lost if you have more than one project going at a time. It also makes it easier to tuck a project away between sewing sessions
Clips are your friend! Clip like pieces together and use clips to attach piece labels to your project pieces
Label everything– some pattern designers like Noodlehead make little label inserts for their patterns, but you can also just tear up a piece of paper into little bits and make your own labels easily. Labeling your pieces prevents you from having to stop and re-measure over and over again to make sure you’re sewing things together correctly
