Mister Domestic's Aura Blog Party & The Star Island Quilt Pattern
When one of the coolest cats in the Quilt-O-Sphere asks you to join the party, you holler a big ol’ YES PLEASE, and, because why not, design a new quilt pattern for the occasion!

My favorite thing about Mathew aka Mister Domestic is his contagious joy, so it seems perfectly fitting to me that his fabric collection, Aura, would indeed match his own vibrant, enthusiastic energy. I was so excited when he asked me to be part of this blog party because collaboration is one of my favorite parts of my job, and Mathew is exactly the kind of person I love to party with!
Mathew’s most recent collection with Art Gallery Fabrics, Aura, was inspired by a trip to Hawaii with his daughter Helena, and the island themes shine in these bright fabrics. As someone who is 1) Moana obsessed and 2) So darn ready for winter to end already, these fabrics have been nothing short of therapeutic to stitch up. And, because I’m an “all or nothing” type, I designed a new quilt pattern, Star Island, especially for the occasion!
Sidebar: I know I’ve been staring at these fabrics for a couple of weeks and everything, but I just canNOT get over the colors. They freaking glow. Also, Mathew did an amazing job of including a variety of prints in this collection, so there is truly something for everyone and the prints create a lot of interesting visual texture when used side by side.
The Star Island Quilt Pattern features a traditional-style block made oversized for a more bold, modern feel. Plus, the blocks make a super cool secondary design that adds to the depth of the quilt. Eight points around the central star remind me of a lantern, fusing both natural and man-made forms of light. To me, this represents the intersection of the natural and developed worlds that we all experience, but that I think comes to a special intersection on an island where even the most sophisticated life is impacted by the tides and moods of the sea. The primary and secondary designs of the quilt also interact as the block features a star and the intersections of the blocks form a cross, much like a compass. Historically, island peoples used the stars for navigation. In our modern lives, this is a reminder that direction can often be found by reconnecting with the natural world, even via a simple walk through a local park. Finally, this quilt is an unabashed celebration of my love for summer, hot weather, and swimming.
